Over the past few years, there have been many heated controversies and disputed topics that have complicated the political system of California. With a slight majority of democrats in California, there have been many political events that have been considered to be “constitutional crises” by those who disagree with the government of California’s actions. Some of these political disagreements are related to term limits for the California legislature and elected constitutional officers, the test of the ratification process for the California Supreme Court, in which two liberal associate Justices were ousted, tax revolts, a test of the state recall provision, and a failure to pass a budget until almost three months after the constitutional deadline.

One of the state’s current divisive topics include water and water rights, resulting in an event known as the California Water Wars. California suffers from unreliable dry season rainfall, causing the state’s water supply to be very limited. However, propositions to solve this problem such as building a canal to transport water have greatly divided the government. Land use is also highly debated because since land has a high price in California, people keep a large proportion of their net worth in land. This causes many people in California to be quite aggressive when it comes to issues that can affect the prices of their homes or investments. Land issues have caused the construction of buildings such as new airports, jails, or other public municipalities to be met with fierce opposition in areas already developed.
